As the new industrial revolution is approaching, the\nEuropean Commission is taking actions to maintain the EU industry\ncompetitiveness by taking advantage of the digital and green transformation. (European\nCommission 2020a)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/sites\/info\/files\/communication-eu-industrial-strategy-march-2020_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"New Industrial Strategy for Europe [pdf] (avautuu uudessa v\u00e4lilehdess\u00e4)\">New Industrial Strategy for Europe [pdf]<\/a> (2020) seeks for climate-neutral competitiveness and making European economy circular and sustainable. Digital technologies have the\npotential to enable a 20% reduction of global CO2 emissions by 2030. (DIGITALEUROPE.\n2020) The twin digital and green transitions will require securing a\nsupply of low-carbon and affordable energy and materials. A strategic investment\nis therefore required in securing the green energy supply and integration of\nrenewable sources. (European Commission 2020c).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interregional Cooperation\nBoost Renewables in Industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In line with the new industrial strategy goals, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interregeurope.eu\/resindustry\/\">RESINDUSTRY<\/a> project aims to increase the integration of renewables in the industry sector and thus decrease the energy dependency and increase the industry competitiveness in the long-term. Source: \u00d6ROK\/APA-Fotoservice\/Mathis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nresearch centre is a test laboratory, in which the goods production process\n(parts manufacturing, assembly, logistics, warehousing) can be simulated in\nreal scenarios. The research centre was co-financed by the European Regional\nDevelopment Fund with a budget of 198 mil EUR. (Digital Factory Vorarlberg\n2019)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also,\nthe manufacturing industry, one of the major energy consumers, is currently in the\ndigital transformation process. Future manufacturing plants are data-based,\nintelligent and transparent. The communication and workload between machines\nand control and planning systems are networked beyond one company door. The\nmanufacturing process can be optimized, e.g. by moving the workload across\ndifferent locations (manufacturing as a service) according to specific\nconstraints, one of them could be the availability of renewable energy, e.g.\nsolar energy during day and night. Another research area covered in the centre\nis data analytics and intelligence, where data from the cloud manufacturing\nplatform on connected machines, workload, orders, and performance are analysed,\ncontributing to (1) transparency in the energy system, (2) demand flexibility\nand (3) increasing energy efficiency. The research centre addresses various\naspects of green digital transformation supporting renewable energy sources by the\nimplementation of Industry 4.0 approaches.
